Things You Must See In Bury St Edmunds

 St. Edmundsbury Cathedral

St Edmundsbury Cathedral is a historic church dating back to the 11th century that you can tour to see an impressive example of Gothic architecture. Most of the modern structure was built in the 16th century, and the most recent additions happened in 2007.

Impressively, its recent modifications don’t distract from the historic grandeur of this cathedral, especially when it comes to the relatively recently completed tower that sports a magnificent Gothic revival styling. You’ll find this cathedral just a short walk east of the town centre.

The History Of Bury

When Charles Dickens visited the market town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk as a young reporter covering the elections in 1835, it obviously made an impression.

Not only did the town and its main hotel (or inn as it was then), The Angel, make an appearance in the Pickwick Papers, published a year after his first stay, but he also returned at least twice on subsequent literary tours, in 1859 and 1861, when he read from his published books at the newly-opened Athenaeum, close to the hotel.

However, there is another, much more significant anniversary taking place in Bury St Edmunds in 2020: the founding of the Abbey of St Edmund, built by King Cnut 1,000 years ago in a bid to atone for the sins of his forefathers (free; english-heritage.org.uk).

The Abbey Gardens

The Abbey Gardens are renowned throughout the UK for their impressive and colourful floral designs that serve as the perfect backdrop for a lovely stroll. Access to the gardens is completely free, so you can enjoy their splendour all you like.

Within the park, you’ll find 20,000 plants blooming in intricate designs, leaving little doubt as to how these gardens won so many awards in the past. You’ll find these gardens just east of the town centre before reaching the River Lark.
