Classic Broadoak Shaker Kitchen in a Georgian Family Home

Layout & Design
This bespoke kitchen redesign in a period Georgian property needed to blend timeless style with the practical demands of busy family life. The homeowners wanted a sociable, open space where they could cook, dine, relax, and gather as a family without compromising the character of their historic home.
The Design Challenge
The existing kitchen was outdated, with low ceilings, poor lighting, and cramped layout that didn’t reflect the needs of a modern family. The brief was clear:
Customer Needs
“We want a kitchen that respects the home’s traditional features, but also works for our everyday life — with room to cook, entertain, and sit as a family.”
Key Issues To Solve
-
Low ceilings with dated lighting
-
Lack of centralised space for family interaction
-
Insufficient and disjointed storage
-
Clashing modern finishes that didn’t suit the home’s period charm
Our Design Approach
We started with a complete rip-out of the existing kitchen and ceilings, allowing us to rewire and relight the space with discreet energy-saving LED lighting. This not only modernised the kitchen’s function but improved ambience without taking away from the room’s traditional feel.
The new kitchen uses Second Nature’s Broadoak shaker doors, combining natural oak finishes with painted sage green cabinetry. This pairing complements the Georgian architecture while creating a fresh and calming aesthetic.
Social, Functional, Elegant
-
A large central island creates a natural gathering point for family activity
-
A separate dining table and chairs offers flexibility for meals, homework or relaxing with a cup of tea
-
A bespoke dresser unit, designed specifically for this space, adds elegance and practical storage without overpowering the room
-
Natural stone flooring, granite and oak worktops, and classic shaker lines help maintain authenticity while ensuring durability
From the Homeowners
We were amazed at how the team reimagined the space. From day one, they listened to how we used our home — and designed a kitchen that works for our lives. The Broadoak shaker doors are beautiful, and the new layout has totally changed the way we live and entertain. It still feels like our period home, just better
